Do Not Hurry The Journey At All

Updated on March 17, 2020 by Lauren Lim

9 weeks ago we welcomed our first baby, Max, into this big world! We’re so incredibly happy to be parents, and have taken about a billion photos of the little guy so far.

And in between the time spent staring at him, photographing him, playing with him, and taking care of him, I’ve actually had a couple moments to think!

See, on one card we received was the following quote:

“Do not hurry the journey at all” – Constantine Cavafy

And that got my mind going. Right now, with our little guy, I often find myself thinking about how I can’t wait until he can walk, talk, we can take photos together, and so on. And then that quote pops into my head, and I remind myself to really enjoy this stage. All those things will come in time, but it’s important to focus on what makes him so wonderful right now.

It’s not hard to see how this concept applies to photography too. No matter where you are in your photography journey, don’t hurry. There are so many wonderful things about each stage, it’s important to take the time to recognize and appreciate them.

So just a little reminder today to enjoy where you’re at. Now I’m back off to snuggle my little man. :)

P.S. If you’re into poetry, the poem the quote came from is quite wonderful. You can read it on Constantine Cavafy’s Wikipedia page.

Thank you for this little piece of wisdom, so encouraging when I’m at a place where I just want to rush into being a big shot photog, blogger, Instagram sensation, etc etc.. Sigh. There’s even a verse in the Bible (Zechariah 4:10) that says “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.” Finneee! I shall not despise this! :) Thanks!
And congrats on the little guy! That little look he’s giving, what a personality!

Congratulations! Max looks so bright-eyed and curious! What a blessing!

I’ve been devouring your blog over the holidays and am so pleased with all the things I’ve been learning! Your posts are so generous and thoughtful. They communicate a lot of useful information, advice and encouragement and are exactly what a noob like me needs! I feel like I “know” you through your posts and videos, so forgive me if I’m a little too familiar. You’ve helped me along my budding photography journey, so I feel very grateful and genuinely happy for the two of you and your new Max! Have a wonderful new year!

    Hi guys,

OMG Max is gorgeous! Congratulations to you both.

I have bought your LR and most recently your ID tutorials and have found them so useful and concise. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. It was money well spent… in a saturated market full of products which promise a lot, but under deliver. Even the most highly rated software guides/books *yawn* how on earth do people stay awake?

Huge congrats! He’s beautiful! Great quote and I remind myself of this with my 3yr old son. Am enjoying every minute. But I also love how this relates to photography, I study photography and fine art at University almost 15 years ago but let fear stop me from being the photographer I wanted to be. So now I am starting over, and not rushing this journey is key. I’m the happiest I have been for a long time and finding your site is a blessing and perfect timing. Thanks for all you are sharing!
    Best wishes
    Emily
